Golar Reaches Commercial Operations Date for FLNG Gimi

Golar LNG’s Gimi vessel has started operations at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim gas project, marking a key milestone for LNG exports from Mauritania and Senegal.

(P&GJ) — Golar LNG said its Gimi floating liquefied natural gas vessel has begun commercial operations at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project offshore Mauritania and Senegal, marking a major milestone for the two West African nations’ entry into the LNG export market.

The project, supported by an estimated 15 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, is expected to produce 2.4 million tons of LNG annually at startup, eventually increasing to 2.7 million tons. Golar’s 20-year lease-and-operate agreement for the facility is projected to generate roughly $3 billion in adjusted EBITDA backlog.

“The commercial launch of the Gimi FLNG facility is a major step forward for the MSGBC Basin and Africa’s LNG market,” said Oré Onagbesan, program director of African Energy Week (AEW).

In conjunction with the announcement, Golar confirmed it will participate in African Energy Week 2025 as a gold partner. The event, scheduled for Sept. 29 to Oct. 3 in Cape Town, will bring together African governments, energy companies and investors to advance opportunities across the natural gas value chain.

The company continues to expand its presence in Africa, with ongoing projects in Cameroon and Nigeria aimed at monetizing offshore gas reserves and contributing to regional energy security.
