Algeria to Launch Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Through Niger After Ramadan

Algeria will begin construction of the long-planned Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline through Niger after Ramadan, with Sonatrach leading development of the cross-border gas corridor.

(P&GJ) — Algeria plans to begin construction of the long-delayed Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) following the holy month of Ramadan, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced after talks with Niger’s President, General Abdourahamane Tiani.

Speaking in Algiers, Tebboune said the two governments agreed to move forward with the pipeline segment that will cross Niger’s territory.

“We have agreed to launch the construction of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline across the territory of our brotherly neighbor, Niger, immediately after Ramadan,” Tebboune said in a joint media statement.

Algeria’s state energy company Sonatrach will oversee construction of the section running through Niger, according to the announcement.

The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline is designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria through Niger to Algeria, where it could connect to existing export infrastructure serving European markets. The project has been discussed for years as part of efforts to expand North African gas export capacity and strengthen regional energy integration.

Tebboune also said Algeria and Niger would convene a joint commission after Ramadan to formalize agreements and monitor implementation of the project.

Beyond energy cooperation, the leaders discussed regional security coordination. Tebboune said the two countries stand “in the same trench” on counterterrorism and emphasized that “The security of Niger and Algeria is indissociable.”

He added: “We will cooperate by exerting maximum effort and leveraging all the capabilities and expertise that Algeria possesses in this field.”

The announcement comes as Europe continues to seek diversified natural gas supply routes, increasing attention on potential African pipeline corridors.
