Constellation, CyrusOne Sign 380-MW Power Deal for Texas Data Center

Constellation’s Calpine unit has signed a 380-MW power agreement with CyrusOne to support a new Texas data center near the Freestone Energy Center, with an additional 380 MW planned for a second phase.

(P&GJ) — Constellation said Calpine LLC, a business unit of the company, has signed a 380-MW agreement with data center developer CyrusOne to support a new facility adjacent to the Freestone Energy Center in Freestone County, Texas.

Under the agreement, Calpine will provide power, grid connectivity and site infrastructure needed to serve the data center, while maintaining electricity supply and reliability for the regional grid. Calpine also entered into an exclusive agreement to provide an additional 380 MW for a planned second phase of the project.

The Freestone agreement follows earlier deals announced in the second half of last year between Calpine and CyrusOne for 400 MW of capacity at the Thad Hill Energy Center in Bosque County, Texas. In total, more than 1,100 MW is now under contract to support CyrusOne data centers in the state.

“This agreement with CyrusOne demonstrates Constellation’s ability to meet the growing demand from the data economy while maintaining grid reliability, creating jobs and economic growth, and benefiting local customers and communities,” said Joe Dominguez, president and CEO of Constellation. “By leveraging existing infrastructure and grid connections, we can help customers move quickly while ensuring continued reliability for Texans.”

Calpine said the project will utilize its Powered Land Capabilities platform, which combines generation, land and grid access to support large-load customers while prioritizing speed-to-market and system reliability.

“This agreement reinforces CyrusOne's commitment to meeting customer demand in Texas,” said Eric Schwartz, CEO of CyrusOne. “Partnering with Constellation and Calpine enables us to deliver reliable, scalable infrastructure while ensuring grid reliability for local communities.”

The new data center will be located next to Calpine’s existing Freestone Energy Center, about 80 miles southeast of Dallas.
