Enagás Deploys Digital Grid Software Across 6,800 Miles of Spain's Gas Network

Enagás has deployed digital grid management software across 11,000 kilometers (6,835 miles) of Spain’s gas transmission network to enhance safety, monitoring and hydrogen readiness.

(P&GJ) — Spain’s national gas transmission operator Enagás is deploying digital grid management software from Emerson’s AspenTech unit to monitor and optimize more than 11,000 kilometers (6,835 miles) of pipeline infrastructure across the country.

The system is designed to enhance real-time supervision, gas tracking and operational safety across Spain’s high-pressure transmission system. Enagás is using AspenTech OSI monarch SCADA™ and AspenTech OSI Continua Pipeline Management™ to strengthen oversight of its network as it prepares to handle a broader mix of gases, including biomethane and hydrogen.

According to Emerson, the software supports real-time energy calculations and monitoring capabilities aimed at identifying hazardous conditions such as overpressure and potential rupture events.

“Industry leaders like Enagás recognize the importance of digital technology in achieving more resilient and efficient utility operations,” said Stuart Harris, general manager, digital grid management at Emerson’s Aspen Technology business. “Our digital grid management solutions provide Enagás with full visibility across its mission-critical systems, in addition to the comprehensive insights needed to support the region’s natural gas supply well into the future."

Enagás operates Spain’s national gas transmission system and has been investing in digitalization initiatives to improve system reliability and prepare infrastructure for increased integration of low-carbon gases.
