Woodside, JERA Lock In Winter LNG Supply Through 2031

Woodside has signed a five-year LNG supply deal with JERA to deliver winter cargoes to Japan starting in 2027, reinforcing long-term energy security during peak seasonal demand.

(P&GJ) — Woodside Energy has signed a five-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreement with JERA to deliver three LNG cargoes per year during Japan’s peak winter season, beginning in 2027.

Under the sale and purchase agreement (SPA), approximately 0.2 million tonnes per year of LNG will be supplied on a delivered ex-ship (DES) basis to Japan during the Northern Hemisphere winter months from December through February, when demand is highest.

The LNG volumes will be sourced from Woodside’s global portfolio, including Scarborough, North West Shelf, Pluto LNG and Louisiana LNG, once operational.

The agreement converts a heads of agreement signed in June 2025 into a binding contract and builds on broader energy cooperation between Woodside and JERA, supported by the Government of Japan and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.

The SPA follows Woodside’s 2024 sale of a 15.1% non-operating interest in the Scarborough joint venture to JERA, as well as a loan agreement with JBIC tied to the Scarborough Energy Project.

Woodside Vice President and Country Manager Japan George Gilboy said the agreement reinforces the company’s role in supporting Japan’s seasonal energy needs.

“This agreement underscores Woodside’s role as a dependable energy partner for Japan, ensuring secure LNG supply during the critical winter months.

Reliable access to energy supports regional stability, and Woodside’s global portfolio enables us to provide this, supporting our customers’ energy security.”

JERA Executive Officer and Head of the LNG Division Kosuke Tanaka said the contract enhances the utility’s ability to manage seasonal demand swings.

“Building on our partnership with Woodside, this agreement enhances our supply resilience and flexibility to respond more effectively to seasonal demand fluctuations, particularly the winter season, supporting Japan with a stable and reliable energy supply.”

JBIC Director General Manabu Kato said the deal aligns with Japan’s broader energy security objectives.

“We are pleased to acknowledge the execution of the SPA, which is intended to help ensure stable LNG supply during Japan’s peak winter demand period. This significant initiative builds upon the framework established between JBIC and Woodside and further strengthens our longstanding cooperation.”

The winter supply agreement adds to a series of LNG contracts Woodside converted from preliminary agreements in 2025, as the company looks to expand its LNG marketing portfolio across Asia and Europe.
