Vinton Dome Seeks FERC Approval for 44.5-Bcf Louisiana Gas Storage Hub
Vinton Dome Storage Hub has filed with FERC to build a 44.5-Bcf underground natural gas storage facility in Louisiana, including five storage caverns, a 55,000-horsepower compressor station and new pipeline interconnections.

(P&GJ) — Vinton Dome Storage Hub LLC has filed an application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) seeking approval to construct a 44.5-Bcf underground natural gas storage facility in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. According to a FERC notice issued June 30, the proposed Vinton Dome Project would include five storage caverns, a 55,000-horsepower compressor station and pipeline interconnections to multiple existing and planned interstate natural gas pipelines.
The company said the project is designed to provide natural gas storage, parking, loaning and wheeling services to power generators, local distribution companies, LNG exporters, interstate pipelines, producers and industrial customers as demand for balancing services continues to grow.
"The Project consists of constructing, owning, operating, and maintaining a new natural gas storage facility with approximately 44.5 billion cubic feet of working gas capacity across five (5) new storage caverns, a new 55,000 horsepower compressor station, and related facilities including natural gas pipeline interconnections and laterals to multiple existing and planned interstate pipelines," the application states.
In its filing, Vinton Dome also requested blanket certificates authorizing certain future facilities and open-access transportation service, approval to charge market-based rates, approval of its proposed FERC gas tariff and waivers of certain regulatory requirements.
According to the application, the storage hub is intended to support the increasing balancing needs of power generators, LNG exporters, interstate pipelines, local distribution companies and other natural gas customers.
"The Project will provide necessary storage, parking, loaning and wheeling services to meet the increasing natural gas system balancing needs of power generators, local distribution companies, liquefied natural gas exporters, natural gas pipelines, natural gas producers, and residential, commercial, and industrial natural gas consumers," the filing states.
FERC said Commission staff will either complete its environmental review within 90 days of the notice or issue a schedule for preparing an environmental assessment or environmental impact statement. Motions to intervene, protests and public comments are due by July 21, 2026.
