Viridi Breaks Ground on Lincoln Renewable Natural Gas Facility
Viridi Energy has begun construction on a renewable natural gas facility at Lincoln's Bluff Road Landfill that will convert landfill methane into pipeline-quality RNG for the Black Hills Energy distribution system.
(P&GJ) — Viridi Energy has started construction on a renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at the City of Lincoln's Bluff Road Landfill that will capture landfill methane and convert it into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas for injection into the Black Hills Energy distribution system.
The facility is expected to begin operations in the first quarter of 2027 with the capacity to process approximately 3,000 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) of landfill gas. The RNG produced will be distributed through Black Hills Energy's natural gas network.
Once operational, the project is expected to produce enough renewable natural gas to meet the annual heating needs of approximately 12,000 homes while reducing methane emissions by converting landfill gas that would otherwise be flared or released.
The City of Lincoln selected Viridi through a competitive request-for-proposals process to finance, design, build, own, operate and maintain the landfill gas-to-RNG facility.
Viridi CEO Dan Crouse said the project represents a long-term investment in the city's energy infrastructure.
"By capturing methane and converting it into renewable natural gas, this facility will create measurable environmental benefits while producing a local, reliable source of low-carbon fuel."
Black Hills Energy said the facility will be its second RNG interconnection project in Lincoln.
"Projects like the Lincoln landfill renewable natural gas facility reflect how we're working with community partners to deliver safe, reliable and cost-effective energy."
The Lincoln project is the fourth landfill gas-to-RNG facility in Viridi's portfolio. The company said it is also developing a fifth landfill gas-to-RNG project in Texas, bringing its total processing capacity to approximately 2.3 million MMBtu.
City of Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Director Liz Elliott said the project will help reduce emissions while making use of an existing waste stream.
"By capturing landfill biogas that would otherwise be wasted, we're strengthening our energy resilience, reducing emissions and delivering long-term value for our community."
