Kinder Morgan Expects July FERC Decision on $3.5 Billion SSE4 Project

Kinder Morgan expects a FERC decision next month on its largest natural gas expansion project while advancing several other pipeline and terminal developments across its backlog.

(P&GJ) — Kinder Morgan expects the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to issue a certificate order in July for its South System Expansion 4 (SSE4) project, a roughly $3.5 billion expansion designed to add approximately 1.3 billion cubic feet per day of capacity on Southern Natural Gas' South Main Line.

The company said the draft environmental impact statement has been issued and the public comment period has concluded. If approved, the first phase is expected to enter service in the fourth quarter of 2028, followed by a second phase in the fourth quarter of 2029. Kinder Morgan's share of the project is estimated at approximately $1.8 billion.

Other Major Projects Advance

Kinder Morgan also provided updates on several other natural gas pipeline projects currently under development.

The company said construction continues on the Trident Intrastate Pipeline, a 219-mile pipeline designed to transport up to 2 billion cubic feet per day across Texas. The first phase is expected to enter service in the first quarter of 2027, with pipe stringing and welding activities underway.

FERC is also expected to issue a certificate order in July for Tennessee Gas Pipeline's Mississippi Crossing project. The approximately $1.7 billion project is designed to move up to 2 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas and could enter service as early as the second quarter of 2028.

Kinder Morgan recently began construction on the LAHA Header Project, a 750,000 Mcf/d intrastate pipeline in Louisiana that will provide transportation service near the KinderHawk gathering system. The project is expected to enter service in the first quarter of 2027.

The company is also advancing the Creekside Lateral project in Central Texas. The 11.2-mile pipeline is designed to serve power generation, industrial and data center demand and is expected to enter service in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Terminal, NGL Projects Progress

Kinder Morgan reported that construction has been completed on the Hiland Express Pipeline conversion project in the Bakken. The former crude oil pipeline is being converted to transport NGLs, with line-fill activities underway and startup expected during the second quarter of 2026.

The company also highlighted the planned acquisition of the Monument Pipeline system, a 225-mile natural gas pipeline network serving LNG, industrial and utility customers in the Houston Ship Channel region. The $505 million transaction is expected to close during the second quarter.

Kinder Morgan said its project backlog remains heavily weighted toward natural gas infrastructure as demand continues to grow from LNG export facilities, power generation projects and data center development.
