PHMSA Announces $22 Million in Pipeline, Hazmat Safety Grants
PHMSA announced more than $22 million in new grant opportunities supporting pipeline safety technology, first responder training and hazardous materials transportation programs.
(P&GJ) — The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has opened more than $22 million in grant funding opportunities aimed at improving pipeline and hazardous materials transportation safety across the United States.
The funding package includes 11 separate grant programs supporting first responder training, community safety education, pipeline safety technology development and partnerships with state, tribal and local agencies.
PHMSA said the grants are intended to strengthen preparedness and improve response capabilities tied to pipeline and hazardous materials incidents.
PHMSA Administrator Paul Roberti said the funding will support both emergency responders and public awareness efforts focused on reducing risks in communities located near pipeline and hazmat transportation networks.
According to the agency, the funding opportunities also include support for research and technology initiatives tied to pipeline safety and hazardous materials transportation.
Applications for the grant programs are now open, with most submissions due by June 19. PHMSA said one of the programs — the Hazardous Materials Instructor Training grant — will be part of a new grant platform pilot program launching later this month.
The agency oversees federal pipeline safety and hazardous materials transportation regulations across the United States.
