Uniper to Sell 20% Stake in OPAL Gas Pipeline as Hydrogen Conversion Advances

Uniper has launched a sale process for its 20% stake in the OPAL gas pipeline, one of Europe’s largest transmission corridors, as the asset progresses toward partial conversion under Germany’s Hydrogen Core Network framework.

Uniper has launched a formal process to sell its 20% ownership stake in the OPAL gas pipeline, in line with a European Commission state aid approval issued in December 2022.

The sale includes 100% of the shares in Lubmin-Brandov Assets GmbH & Co. KG, which holds Uniper’s fractional interest in the regulated pipeline. The remaining 80% stake in OPAL is owned by GASCADE Gastransport GmbH.

OPAL is one of Europe’s largest transmission corridors, extending approximately 470 km from Lubmin in northeastern Germany to Brandov on the Czech border. The pipeline plays a key role in regional gas transportation and is also being integrated into Germany’s Hydrogen Core Network framework.

As part of that transition, conversion of OPAL’s northern segment to hydrogen service was completed in mid-December 2025, with conversion of the southern segment planned by the end of 2030.

Uniper has invited interested parties to submit expressions of interest between Jan. 15 and Jan. 29, 2026. Following the initial phase, qualified bidders will receive further transaction materials, including a teaser and process letter outlining the next steps. Uniper said the sale process will be conducted in an open, fair, and transparent manner.
