DNV to Certify UK CO₂ Pipeline Network for Northern Endurance Project

DNV will certify the UK’s Northern Endurance CO₂ pipeline and storage network, supporting safe startup of a major carbon capture and transport project in the North Sea.

(P&GJ) — DNV has been selected to certify the Northern Endurance Partnership’s (NEP) CO₂ transport and storage network, a key pipeline system supporting the UK’s East Coast Cluster carbon capture projects.

The certification role, approved by UK regulator Ofgem, will verify that the project meets requirements under its carbon dioxide transport and storage license before operations begin.

The NEP system is designed to transport captured CO₂ from industrial sites in Teesside through an onshore and offshore pipeline network for permanent storage beneath the southern North Sea.

DNV’s scope includes verification across the full transport chain, from compression and conditioning to dense phase through to offshore pipeline and injection systems.

The certification process is intended to confirm construction quality, system integrity and operational readiness before CO₂ begins flowing through the network.

Hari Vamadevan, senior vice president for energy systems at DNV, said independent certification provides assurance that complex infrastructure meets regulatory and safety requirements.

He said the process will verify design, construction and commissioning to ensure the system performs as intended when operations begin.

The independent certifier role is a new requirement in the UK’s carbon capture sector, aimed at strengthening regulatory oversight as large-scale CO₂ transport infrastructure is developed.

The Northern Endurance project is part of the UK’s first wave of carbon capture developments and is expected to play a central role in transporting emissions from industrial hubs to offshore storage sites.
