UK's Grain LNG Opens Bidding for 2029 Regasification Capacity

Grain LNG has begun seeking market interest in approximately 3 MMtpy of regasification capacity that could become available in 2029 as existing contracts expire.

(P&GJ) — Grain LNG has launched an expression of interest process for regasification capacity that is expected to become available in 2029 as existing terminal contracts expire.

The company is seeking feedback from market participants on future capacity needs and a proposed capacity-sharing arrangement that could support multiple users at the UK's largest LNG import terminal.

The available capacity is expected to include approximately 200,000 cubic meters of LNG storage, 125 GWh/d of regasification capacity — equivalent to roughly 3 million tonnes per annum (MMtpy) — and associated berthing rights.

According to Grain LNG, the capacity could become available beginning in October 2029. The company is evaluating several commercial structures, including awarding the capacity to a single customer, dividing it among multiple users or supporting joint bids through a capacity-sharing arrangement.

Simon Culkin, managing director of Grain LNG, said the process is intended to help the company understand market demand and shape its future capacity offering.

"Grain LNG plays an important role in the UK's gas supply system and provides access to global LNG markets," Culkin said. "This process will help us better understand customer requirements and ensure the future capacity offering aligns with market needs."

Responses will be accepted through July 15. Grain LNG said the feedback will be used to determine whether it proceeds with a formal capacity allocation process and to finalize the structure of any future offering.

The terminal, located on the Isle of Grain in Kent, is one of Europe's largest LNG import facilities and a key entry point for LNG supplies into the UK gas market.
