Egypt, Lebanon Sign Gas Supply Deal for Deir Ammar Power Plant

Egypt and Lebanon have signed an MoU to supply natural gas to Lebanon’s Deir Ammar power plant, leveraging Egyptian LNG infrastructure and regional pipeline routes to boost electricity generation.

(P&GJ) — Egypt and Lebanon have signed a memorandum of understanding to supply natural gas to Lebanon’s Deir Ammar Power Plant, a move aimed at easing power shortages and strengthening regional energy integration.

The agreement between Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Lebanon’s Ministry of Energy and Water outlines plans to route gas through Egypt’s existing production and export infrastructure, including the Idku and Damietta LNG facilities, according to an official statement.

As part of the arrangement, Egypt will also rely on recently added regional import capacity, including the Energos Force floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) docked at Jordan’s Port of Aqaba. Gas would be transported onward through the Arab Gas Pipeline to support electricity generation in northern Lebanon.

Egypt has expanded its LNG export activity in 2025, shipping an estimated 150,000–155,000 cubic meters of LNG to markets including Greece, Italy and Türkiye, underscoring its role as a regional gas hub.

During meetings tied to the agreement, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun described the MoU as a key step toward boosting electricity production, while Egyptian officials said technical teams from both countries will move quickly to implement the deal.

The gas supply framework builds on broader Egyptian-Lebanese energy cooperation formalized earlier this year, including agreements covering petroleum expertise exchange, refined product trade and regulatory coordination.
