bp Starts Up Atlantis Facility Expansion Project in Gulf of Mexico

Located about 150 miles south of New Orleans, the Atlantis field has been producing for nearly 20 years.

(P&GJ) — bp has started production from its Atlantis Major Facility Expansion in the Gulf of America, bringing online an offshore project designed to increase reservoir pressure, extend the field's operating life and add approximately 10,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day of gross peak annualized production.

Located about 150 miles south of New Orleans, the Atlantis field has been producing for nearly 20 years. The expansion includes two new subsea water injection wells, along with new subsea trees and topside water injection pumps that will help maintain reservoir pressure and unlock additional oil production.

The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. bp expects the expansion to add approximately 5,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day of net production to the company.

The Atlantis expansion is part of bp's broader strategy to increase production from existing offshore infrastructure while developing new projects in the U.S. Gulf. Earlier this year, the company sanctioned the Kaskida and Tiber production platforms, which are expected to add a combined 160,000 barrels per day of new production capacity by the end of the decade.

"Atlantis has been one of the anchors of our Gulf business for nearly two decades, and this expansion proves there is still more value to be generated," said Andy Krieger, senior vice president for the Gulf of America and Canada.

"We're extending the life of a great asset while supporting jobs and investment in the region — all while making the most of infrastructure that's already in place."

Atlantis operates in approximately 7,074 feet (2,156 meters) of water. bp operates the field with a 56% working interest, while Woodside Energy owns the remaining 44%.
