H2med’s BarMar Hydrogen Pipeline Enters FEED Phase
The BarMar subsea hydrogen pipeline has entered the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase, advancing the H2med corridor toward a final investment decision and planned startup in 2032.
(P&GJ) — The BarMar subsea hydrogen pipeline has entered the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase, marking a key milestone for the H2med corridor as the project advances toward a final investment decision and planned commercial operation in 2032.
The pipeline, which will connect Barcelona, Spain, and Marseille, France, is a central component of H2med, the European Union's first major green hydrogen corridor.
The H2med consortium said completion of the pre-FEED phase confirmed the project's overall technical feasibility, established the design basis for the offshore pipeline and compression station, and identified a preferred corridor route based on ongoing environmental studies.
During the FEED phase, project developers will finalize the pipeline route, complete the compression station design, prepare permitting documentation and develop technical specifications for construction and material procurement.
The consortium said the next steps include awarding FEED engineering contracts and conducting detailed offshore marine surveys. The engineering work will provide the technical foundation needed to support a final investment decision before construction begins.
The BarMar project received more than €28 million in funding through the European Commission's Connecting Europe Facility to support engineering studies, marine and environmental surveys, environmental impact assessments and permitting activities.
BarMar CEO Francisco de la Flor said the project is progressing from feasibility work into detailed engineering.
"We are moving from feasibility studies to concrete industrial modeling, a key step toward supporting Europe's decarbonization objectives," de la Flor said.
He said H2med remains on track for commissioning in 2032, subject to regulatory approvals across the corridor.
Separately, energy ministers from Portugal, France and Spain met in Paris on July 6 with European Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, regulators and transmission system operators to discuss the rollout of regional energy interconnections, including the H2med corridor.
