Halliburton, Australia's Beetaloo Energy Partner on Gas-to-Data Center Development
Beetaloo Energy and Halliburton have signed an agreement to evaluate gas development supporting a proposed Northern Territory project that would pair natural gas, power generation and pipeline infrastructure with hyperscale data centers.
(P&GJ) — Beetaloo Energy Australia and Halliburton have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) to evaluate the proposed Beetaloo Digital development in Australia's Northern Territory, a project designed to integrate upstream natural gas production with pipeline infrastructure, gas-fired power generation and hyperscale data centers.
Under the agreement, Halliburton will provide technical expertise to assess and develop the upstream gas resource supporting the project. The company also expects to contribute field development planning, drilling, completions, production optimization and power generation capabilities.
The proposed development is centered on Beetaloo Energy's natural gas resources in the Beetaloo Basin and a recently secured 185-hectare site at Weddell, southeast of Darwin. Beetaloo Energy said it is assembling a consortium of companies specializing in upstream development, pipelines, power generation and data center construction.
"Following the Northern Territory Government's decision to grant us exclusivity over the Weddell site, we are committed to building a world-class consortium capable of delivering this opportunity," CEO Alex Underwood said.
"We are pleased to announce this MOU with Halliburton. The company brings a proven track record in oilfield services, engineering execution and collaborative solutions, making it a valuable potential participant in the project."
According to the companies, the project would develop new gas-fired generating capacity rather than rely on the existing electricity grid. Excess generation capacity could also provide additional baseload power while supporting the growth of hyperscale data centers and AI infrastructure across the Asia-Pacific region.
Beetaloo Energy said it views long-term demand from data centers as an opportunity to support sustained upstream gas development and future infrastructure investment.
"Hyperscale data centres and AI facilities operate continuously, creating durable and predictable demand," Underwood said. "That demand profile supports long-term field development, accelerates upstream investment, and positions Beetaloo Digital as a potential large-scale, sustained cash flow generator for Beetaloo Energy."
The project remains in the early planning stages and is subject to concept studies, financing, consortium formation and regulatory approvals.
