Valmet to Automate Finland’s First CO₂ Liquefaction Plant
A new carbon capture project in Finland will turn biogas emissions into reusable CO₂, with automation playing a central role in the plant’s operation.
(P&GJ) — Valmet has been selected to supply an automation system for a carbon dioxide (CO₂) liquefaction plant being developed by Suomen Biovoima Oy at Auris Energia's biogas facility in Mäntsälä, Finland.
The project is expected to be the first CO₂ liquefaction plant in Finland built using the technology and is designed to capture, purify and liquefy CO₂ generated during biogas production for industrial reuse.
Instead of releasing CO₂ into the atmosphere, the plant will recover the gas for applications including concrete production, where it can be permanently bound within building materials. The project is intended to support carbon capture and utilization (CCU) while advancing circular economy initiatives.
Valmet will provide its DNAe Distributed Control System (DCS), which is designed to automate plant operations, improve process visibility and enable remote monitoring. According to the company, the system will help optimize energy and raw material use while reducing the need for manual intervention through automated process controls.
The automation platform will also provide secure data transfer, plant monitoring, reporting and key performance indicator (KPI) tracking for Auris Energia.
"By capturing and utilizing CO₂, we can turn emissions into a valuable product while improving overall efficiency," said Mikko Bengts, sales manager at Suomen Biovoima. "Collaboration with Valmet allows us to bring modern automation into our solutions and scale these innovations in future projects."
Valmet said the automation system is designed to support long-term operation through ongoing system upgrades and lifecycle services intended to improve plant performance over time.

"Together, we are creating added value for Auris Energia's biogas plant through secure monitoring, reporting and process automation."
The project will be delivered in phases, with the primary automation system scheduled for delivery in November 2026, installation planned for December 2026 and startup expected during the first quarter of 2027. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
