MODEC to Supply Mooring System for Coral Norte FLNG Project
MODEC will supply the internal turret mooring system for the Coral Norte FLNG project offshore Mozambique, supporting the 3.6-MMtpy development ahead of its planned 2028 startup.
(P&GJ) — MODEC will supply its SOFEC internal turret mooring system for the Coral Norte floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project offshore Mozambique, supporting Eni and its partners as the 3.6-million-metric-tonne-per-year (MMtpy) development moves toward first LNG production in 2028.
The company will work with the Technip Energies-JGC joint venture to integrate the mooring system into the FLNG facility. The internal turret is designed to allow the vessel to safely rotate with changing weather and sea conditions while remaining securely anchored in the Rovuma Basin.
Coral Norte reached final investment decision in October 2025, and the FLNG hull was launched in January 2026 at Samsung Heavy Industries' shipyard in Geoje, South Korea. The project remains on schedule for startup in 2028.
The contract builds on MODEC's previous work on the Coral Sul FLNG development. The company said Coral Norte incorporates design improvements based on operating experience from Coral Sul while adding 3.6 MMtpy of new LNG liquefaction capacity.
"Coral Norte is an important milestone for the industry and for Mozambique, and we are honored to contribute to this landmark FLNG project," said Arun Duggal, head of MODEC's Mooring Solutions business unit.
MODEC said the turret mooring system is a critical component of the facility, enabling continuous offshore operations while maintaining safe station-keeping in the metocean conditions of the Rovuma Basin.
A spokesperson for the Technip Energies-JGC joint venture said the companies are building on the engineering and operational experience gained during the Coral Sul project.
"Our partnership on Coral Norte builds on that success and supports our broader commitment to sustainable development in Mozambique," the spokesperson said.
