PipeChina, GTT to Build World's Largest LNG Storage Tanks in China

A major LNG terminal in South China is moving forward with three storage tanks that could set a new global benchmark for size and capacity.

(P&GJ) — China’s Yuedong LNG Terminal in Guangdong province will add three 240,000-cubic-meter LNG storage tanks, which are expected to be the largest onshore membrane containment tanks in the world, according to technology provider GTT.

The tanks will be built by China Chengda Engineering Co. for PipeChina as part of the Yuedong LNG Terminal project in Jieyang City, a key natural gas hub in southern China.

Each tank will have a storage capacity of 240,000 cubic meters and will utilize GTT's GST membrane full-containment technology. According to the company, the design can reduce steel requirements compared with conventional LNG storage tank construction while improving insulation performance and increasing storage capacity within a similar footprint.

The storage facilities are designed primarily for LNG service but can also accommodate other liquefied gases, including ethane, propane, ethylene and ammonia.

François Michel, CEO of GTT, said the project reflects continued adoption of membrane containment technology in large-scale LNG infrastructure developments.

"This project demonstrates growing demand for advanced LNG storage solutions and highlights the role of membrane technology in supporting large-scale energy infrastructure projects," Michel said.

Delivery of the three tanks is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2028.

The Yuedong LNG Terminal is being developed as part of China's expanding natural gas infrastructure network and is expected to strengthen LNG import and storage capacity in South China.
