Turkey Secures 33 Bcm of Absheron Gas Under New 15-Year Supply Deal

A new long-term agreement will connect future production from Azerbaijan's Absheron gas field to Turkey's energy market, supporting regional gas flows and expanding export volumes from the Caspian region.

(P&GJ) — SOCAR, Turkey's BOTAS, TotalEnergies and ADNOC have signed a 15-year agreement that will deliver 33 billion cubic meters (Bcm) of natural gas from Azerbaijan's Absheron field to Turkey beginning in 2029.

The agreement was signed during the Baku Energy Forum and supports planned production growth at the offshore Absheron gas field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea. Gas volumes are expected to average approximately 2.25 Bcm per year and will be transported through the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipeline.

The deal is tied to the second phase of development at the Absheron field, where first production is expected in late 2028 or early 2029. The field is operated by Joint Operating Company of Absheron Petroleum B.V. (JOCAP), with SOCAR, TotalEnergies and ADNOC holding ownership interests.

Absheron is located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Baku in waters approximately 500 meters deep. The field is estimated to contain roughly 350 bcm of natural gas and 100 million metric tons of condensate. The first phase of development entered production in 2023 and reached peak output of about 1.5 Bcm per year in 2024, supplying Azerbaijan's domestic market.

Once both development phases are completed, the project is expected to produce at least 4.5 Bcm of natural gas annually. The new agreement will support Turkey's long-term gas supply portfolio while expanding export volumes from Azerbaijan's growing Caspian gas sector.
