ATCO’s 143-Mile, 1.1 Bcf/d Yellowhead Pipeline Project Wins Regulatory Approval
ATCO Energy Systems won regulatory approval for its 143-mile Yellowhead Pipeline in Alberta, a project set to deliver 1.1 Bcf/d of natural gas and create 2,000 jobs.
(P&GJ) — ATCO Energy Systems has cleared a major milestone on its Yellowhead Pipeline Project after the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) approved its Need Assessment Application.
The 230-kilometer (143-mile) pipeline, running from Peers to Fort Saskatchewan, will add 1.1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of natural gas capacity to Alberta’s transmission system. ATCO said the project is expected to create 2,000 direct jobs during construction and support an average of 12,000 jobs annually through downstream investments, contributing an estimated $3.9 billion to Alberta’s GDP once operational.
“This approval is a critical step forward in ensuring Alberta's growing communities and industry have the reliable energy they need,” said Bob Myles, chief executive officer of Canadian Utilities, ATCO’s parent company. “The AUC’s decision follows a rigorous review process, which acknowledged the project's strong contractual support – 90 per cent of capacity is already committed – and its alignment with long-term demand forecasts.”
ATCO expects to file a facilities application later this year seeking AUC approval for construction and operation. Pending approval, construction would begin in 2026. The company also plans continued consultations with communities along the route and is exploring equity partnership opportunities with Indigenous groups.
