Consumers Energy Launches 8-Mile Michigan Gas Pipeline Replacement
Consumers Energy has launched an 8-mile natural gas pipeline replacement project across four Michigan cities, targeting aging infrastructure dating back to the 1950s. The multi-year upgrade will modernize service for more than 750,000 customers and run through 2029.
(P&GJ) — Consumers Energy has begun construction on the Four Cities Metro Pipeline project, replacing more than eight miles of aging natural gas infrastructure across Oakland and Macomb counties.
The project spans Royal Oak, Clawson, Madison Heights and Warren, and is designed to modernize gas delivery for more than 750,000 residential and commercial customers in the region. Initial construction activity in 2026 will focus on Royal Oak, Clawson and Warren.
The existing pipeline dates back to the 1950s. Its replacement is part of the utility’s broader effort to improve system reliability and safety while maintaining long-term service capacity.
“Projects like this are vital to strengthening the reliability of our natural gas system,” said Holly Bowers, vice president of natural gas engineering and supply at Consumers Energy.
The multi-year program is expected to run through 2029. In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the project is expected to support more than 100 jobs annually during construction.
Consumers Energy said it is coordinating with local municipalities to manage construction impacts, including traffic disruptions, as work progresses across the four-city corridor.
