Enbridge Subsidiary Wins U.S. Permit for Bakken Cross-Border Pipeline Segment

A subsidiary of Enbridge has received a U.S. presidential permit to construct and operate a cross-border crude pipeline segment in North Dakota, enabling transport between the U.S. and Canada.

(P&GJ) — A subsidiary of Enbridge has been granted federal approval to construct and operate a cross-border crude pipeline segment in North Dakota, marking a key regulatory step for Bakken oil transportation between the United States and Canada.

The presidential permit authorizes Bakken Pipeline Company LP to build and maintain pipeline facilities at the U.S.-Canada border near Portal, North Dakota. The project includes a 24-inch diameter pipeline segment extending from the border to a nearby shut-off valve or pumping station within the United States.

The line is designed to transport crude oil and a range of refined petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel and natural gas liquids, between the two countries. The permit allows for operational flexibility, including adjustments to throughput levels and flow direction, subject to regulatory oversight.

As part of the approval, the project remains subject to federal, state and local regulations, including pipeline safety standards enforced by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. Additional permits and authorizations may still be required before construction and operation proceed.

The permit also outlines conditions for inspection, reporting and potential federal control of the facilities under national security circumstances, reflecting the strategic importance of cross-border energy infrastructure.

The approval represents a key milestone for the Enbridge-backed project, which supports continued movement of crude and refined products across the U.S.-Canada border from the Bakken region.
