AUMA Launches TIGRON SIL Actuators for Safety-Critical Pipeline Applications

(P&GJ) — AUMA has introduced a safety-certified version of its TIGRON electric actuator line, expanding options for operators with safety-critical pipeline and process control requirements.

AUMA’s TIGRON SIL actuators combine maximum safety for safety-related applications up to SIL 3 with outstanding configuration flexibility, providing solutions even for highly complex safety requirements.

The new TIGRON SIL actuators are designed for applications requiring Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3, combining explosion-proof construction with configurable safety functions for complex operating environments.

Up to four different safety functions can be configured within a single actuator and assigned user-defined priorities. Additional parameters—including end-position seating type, tripping torque, and overload protection—can be customized to meet specific system requirements. A built-in timer function allows the actuator to slow shortly before reaching the valve end position, helping reduce pressure surges in pipelines.

The TIGRON SIL actuator is certified for the safety functions Safe ESD OPEN and Safe ESD CLOSE (with and without timer function), Safe Stop, and Safe End Position Feedback OPEN and CLOSE. These functions are controlled and monitored by safety-related firmware.

The safety-relevant components were developed and evaluated in accordance with IEC 61508:2010 and ISO 13849, with certification provided by TÜV Nord. According to AUMA, SIL 3 can be achieved with a redundant system setup.

Beyond safety certification, TIGRON SIL retains the core features of the TIGRON series, including IIC explosion protection, making it suitable for hydrogen service. The actuator is designed for demanding operating conditions and is available with multiple digital interfaces, including Profinet, to support integration with common control systems.

TIGRON SIL also supports connectivity with CORALINK, AUMA’s digital ecosystem, enabling data exchange to support predictive maintenance strategies.
