Pipeline Explosion Leaves Hundreds Without Natural Gas in Northern Minnesota
Damage to an interstate natural gas pipeline has cut off supply to Minnesota Energy Resources, leaving about 650 customers without service as crews work to restore gas and deploy temporary fuel supplies.
(P&GJ) — A natural gas pipeline explosion on Jan. 16 disrupted fuel deliveries to northern Minnesota communities, cutting service to hundreds of customers served by Minnesota Energy Resources, according to reporting by WDIO.
The outage affects roughly 650 customers in the Willow River, Sturgeon Lake and Finlayson areas after a damaged segment of a Northern Natural Gas pipeline cut off fuel deliveries to the local distribution system. The pipeline operator has been unable to transport gas to the utility while repairs are underway.
To maintain limited service, Northern Natural Gas is deploying trucked natural gas supplies to temporarily support homes and businesses. Minnesota Energy Resources said portions of the system could begin receiving temporary service as fuel becomes available, with restoration efforts continuing overnight and into the following day.
During the interim phase, customers who regain heat are being asked to conserve gas by keeping thermostats set between 50°F and 55°F and minimizing use of nonessential gas appliances.
Minnesota Energy Resources has mobilized additional crews from across the state and brought in outside contractors to support restoration work. Crews are working extended hours, and residents seeking overnight service visits were asked to leave porch or interior lights on to indicate occupancy. Homes without visible lighting are scheduled for daytime visits.
As reported by WDIO, the utility warned that permanent restoration could take several days due to the severity of the pipeline damage. Minnesota Energy Resources said it will continue to provide updates as repairs progress and supply conditions improve.
