TotalEnergies, Eni Approve Cyprus-to-Egypt LNG Project

TotalEnergies and Eni have approved development of the Cronos gas field offshore Cyprus, with gas set to flow by subsea pipeline to Egypt's Damietta LNG terminal for export to European markets beginning in 2028.

(P&GJ) — TotalEnergies and Eni have reached a final investment decision (FID) to develop the Cronos gas field offshore Cyprus, advancing the country's first natural gas project and establishing a new LNG export route to Europe through existing infrastructure in Egypt.

The companies, which each hold a 50% interest in Cyprus' offshore Block 6, expect production to begin in 2028.

The project will be developed with four subsea wells connected by a subsea pipeline to Egypt, where the gas will be processed and liquefied at the Damietta LNG terminal before being exported to European markets.

At plateau production, the field is expected to produce approximately 500 MMcfd, equivalent to about 2.8 MMtpy of LNG. TotalEnergies will market half of the production, or approximately 1.4 MMtpy.

The development will utilize existing offshore and LNG infrastructure in Egypt, including facilities associated with the Zohr field, allowing the partners to accelerate development while reducing project costs and emissions.

The FID follows the signing of a host government agreement in February 2025 and a series of commercial agreements covering gas transportation through Egypt, liquefaction at Damietta LNG and LNG marketing.

The partners also said the project could support future development of additional gas discoveries within Block 6.

TotalEnergies Chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné said the project will establish Cyprus as a new natural gas supplier in the Eastern Mediterranean while strengthening LNG exports to Europe.

"As Cyprus' first gas development project, Cronos will support the development of a new regional gas hub in the Eastern Mediterranean, leveraging Egypt's infrastructure," Pouyanné said.

"This new gas route in the Mediterranean will contribute to Europe's energy security by diversifying its LNG supply sources."

Pouyanné added that using existing gas processing and liquefaction infrastructure aligns with the company's strategy of developing lower-cost, lower-emission LNG projects.

TotalEnergies and Eni discovered the Cronos field in 2022 and completed appraisal drilling in 2024.
