Zambia Cabinet Approves Two Cross-Border Fuel Pipelines to Boost Energy Supply

Zambia’s cabinet has approved two cross-border pipeline projects linking the country with Tanzania and Namibia to strengthen fuel supply security and meet rising petroleum demand.

(P&GJ) — Zambia’s cabinet has approved plans to develop two cross-border pipeline projects aimed at strengthening the country’s fuel supply network and reducing reliance on a single import corridor.

The projects include the Tanzania–Zambia Multi-Products Pipeline and the Namibia–Zambia Refined Petroleum and Natural Gas Pipeline, which will be developed under a public-private partnership arrangement.

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting held at State House, according to a press statement issued by Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa.

Mweetwa said the projects are intended to diversify Zambia’s fuel supply sources and strengthen the national petroleum distribution system.

“The projects will provide alternative sources of petroleum products and strengthen the country’s supply chain.”

Zambia’s fuel demand is expected to increase significantly over the coming years, prompting the government to pursue new infrastructure investments.

He explained that with national fuel consumption projected to reach about 3.7 million tonnes annually by 2030, the pipelines are expected to support rising demand while helping reduce supply costs and stabilize fuel prices.

Mr. Mweetwa added that the development will enhance supply security and position Zambia as an emerging regional energy hub while supporting long-term economic growth.
