Origin Deploys Smart Gas Technology Across Australia

Origin Energy and Landis+Gyr are rolling out smart gas metering technology across Australia, modernizing gas network operations through remote monitoring and digital infrastructure upgrades.

(P&GJ) — Origin Energy is partnering with Landis+Gyr to deploy smart gas metering technology across its Australian gas network, part of a broader effort to modernize gas distribution operations and improve customer service without replacing existing infrastructure.

The project will install Internet of Things (IoT) communication modules on existing gas meters serving residential and commercial customers. The upgrades will allow remote meter readings and provide near real-time operational data across Origin's network.

The rollout is expected to occur over the next 18 months and is among the first large-scale efforts in Australia to digitize gas network operations across an entire customer base.

According to the companies, the technology is designed to reduce estimated billing, eliminate most manual meter-reading requirements and improve visibility into gas network performance.

"This upgrade is intended to improve the customer experience while making better use of existing infrastructure," Amber Fennell, Origin Energy's general manager for LPG, said in a statement. She added that the project will be completed without disrupting customer gas service.

Landis+Gyr said the system creates a platform for future digital applications while allowing utilities to continue using existing meter assets. The company estimates the technology could eventually be deployed across roughly 2 million compatible gas meters already installed throughout Australia.

The project reflects a growing trend among gas utilities to use digital monitoring and communications technology to improve operational efficiency and modernize aging distribution networks.
